Universal Parks & Disney Announce Major Affordable Housing Initiatives in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – Two major theme park giants, Universal Parks & Resorts and Walt Disney World, are making significant strides in addressing the affordable housing crisis in the Orlando market. Universal Parks & Resorts, in partnership with developer Wendover Housing Partners, has unveiled the initial development plan for Catchlight Crossings, a pioneering community aimed at providing vital housing solutions.

The Catchlight Crossings project, part of Universal’s Housing for Tomorrow initiative, aims to offer over 1,000 units of affordable and mixed-income housing. Situated on 20 acres of prime land in Orlando’s tourist corridor, the community will feature innovative amenities designed to enhance resident lifestyles and foster inclusivity. Highlights include tuition-free preschool, on-site medical facilities, extensive retail options, and recreational spaces such as pools, playgrounds, and fitness centers.

John Sprouls, Executive Vice President of Universal Parks & Resorts, emphasized the project’s commitment to sustainable community development: "Our vision is to create a model community that prioritizes resident well-being and enriches the Orlando area for generations to come."

Meanwhile, Walt Disney World has allocated nearly 80 acres of land in southwest Orange County for another ambitious affordable housing venture. This initiative aims to construct over 1,300 affordable homes close to schools and the expanding Flamingo Crossings Town Center, benefitting a diverse array of residents including Disney cast members.

Jeff Vahle, President of Walt Disney World Resort, underscored Disney’s dedication to community partnership: "We recognize the urgent need for affordable housing in Central Florida. By leveraging our strengths and collaborating with local developers, we aim to make a meaningful impact on housing accessibility."

Both projects are currently navigating the approval process with Orange County authorities. As Orlando grapples with a 25% year-over-year increase in rental costs, according to Yardi Matrix, these initiatives represent a pivotal step towards addressing critical housing needs in the region.
